Vision of Consortium for Alaska Native Higher
Education
VISION: The Consortium for Alaska Native Higher Education
(CANHE) envisions a future in which Alaska's people are served by
Native institutions of higher learning that promote Alaska native
cultural values and community well-being.
CANHE MISSION: The Consortium for Alaska Native Higher
Education will provide a statewide support structure for regional
higher education initiatives that envision the creation of culturally
responsive learning environments in accordance with traditional
values and guidance from the elders.
GUIDING PRINCIPALS
- Alaska Native-controlled post secondary education institutions
will improve the educational achievement of Alaska Natives. These
institutions will help preserve and promote Alaska Native
languages, culture and values.
- Tribal colleges in the U. S. have demonstrated success in
educating American Indians and Alaska Natives.
- Funding can be secured from private foundations and federal
sources to partially support the operation of tribally-controlled
colleges and to provide student scholarships.
- Alaska Native non-profit associations, tribes, corporations
and organizations allocate resources for educational programs.
These organizations are encouraged to utilize the training
capacities of Alaska Native-controlled post secondary educational
institutions.
- Alaska Native organizations working together for improved
Alaska Native education have more power and a higher chance of
success than working separately.
- The Consortium for Alaska Native Higher Education is the
statewide organization for outreach, collaboration, and mutual
support for the Alaska Native-controlled colleges.
- Alaska Native-controlled colleges have the flexibility and
community knowledge to better serve Alaska Native
communities.
- Involvement with other American tribal colleges through the
American Indian Higher Education Consortium will be mutually
beneficial.
- A tribally controlled post-secondary education process will
improve the educational achievement of Alaska Natives and help
preserve our languages, culture and values.
- CANHE should engage in collaborative partnerships with the
organizations and institutions such as school districts; colleges
and universities; and industry leading to mutually beneficial
outcomes for Alaska Natives and the institutions.
- CANHE members share the goals of the World Indigenous Nations
Higher Education Consortium as articulated in the Declaration on
Indigenous Peoples Higher Education signed at Kananaskis, Alberta,
Canada August 5, 2002.
- CANHE will promote indigenous research that is respectful of
cultural and intellectual property rights and closely integrated
with the communities being served.
