Ice fishing also known as manaq in Yupik language is what we do around here in the winter. It means ice fishing. People go out and sometimes travel.
How we ice fish is we drill or pick on thick ice until we reach the water. Then we manaq for fish. The kinds of fish we catch are pike, salmon and white fish. These fish are caught often, sometimes eels are caught, but thats rare.
What we use to catch these fish is handmade and easy to make. You need alot of string, a big wood stick, and hooks. What you do next is wrap the sting around at the end of the wood more than the hangover string . Then you put the string through the hook, tie it, then burn the tip so it won’t get loose.
For the fish bait we use meluq (fish eggs). When we manaq, to get the fish attracted to the bait we involve movement to the string. We move the wood up and down so the string will move and the fish will see it . When we move it the movement is slow. Sometimes it takes awhile to catch a fish.
This is how manaq is set up. We do this in the winter until the ice starts to break up. Because it is dangerous after that. People do this so they can have fish to eat and show young ones to manaq so they can learn. They have fun doing this.
