Clara's Ear Surgery

Two weeks after school was out in May, I cut king salmon for drying with my sister Linda, and Palassa, my brothers Robert and Alvin Jr., and my son, Matthew. The Catholic volunteers Sean and Ward helped head and gut the fish.

It was fun working with the volunteers. We dried about four buckets of King salmon. Then we made salt fish when our drying racks were too full.

During one of the days we were cutting fish we lost my daughter Tamlyn. I saw her at my mother's house during dinner time, but after that I didn't see her for about an hour. My mother-in-law, Fedusia, and my daughters and I were looking for Tamlyn on foot and over the VHF, but nobody had seen or heard her. I was getting very scared because I saw her at the beach earlier by herself. By the time I was starting to panic, though, Paula found her! She'd been napping in an old truck behind Vernon Evan's house. That was a scare.

On June 25th I traveled to Anchorage to have ear surgery. I stayed with Frank Owletuck while I was there. On the 26th I had a hearing and blood test. Then on June 27th at 10:30 a.m. I was admitted into Geneva Woods Medical Center for my ear surgery. Dr. Williams had to cut behind my right ear to replace my old damaged ear drum. Some parts of my old ear drum were stuck to my middle ear bones, and that had to be corrected right away. I was brought afterwards to the Alaska Regional Hospital for recovery. I was there for 48 hours. Then on June 28th I had my dressing removed at Geneva Woods Medical Center. I was afraid to put my glasses on because I thought my temple would cause my ear to fall off! But my Dr. assured me that it was okay to use my glasses.

On June 29th I traveled back to Bethel where Andrea and Paula were waiting for me with their aunt Theresa. They were glad to see me. When I got to Theresa's house, the first thing I noticed was Andera's shiner. She told me that she got it from a boating accident. So I stayed one more day at Bethel to have her checked. There were no skull fractures, so I came home on July 1st. I was glad to be home! I've been trying to heal my ear ever since.
