Solution/suspension. There is a difference between a substance dissolving
in a liquid (solution), like sugar in coffee, and a substance being held
in suspension, like silt in a river. Explore this difference. Where on
the river does the silt tend to settle out, and where is it picked up?
Pour the solution and suspension through a coffee filter. Which is changed?
Length of a river. Scientists say the length of a river never
changes. If it cuts short one place, it will get longer in another in time.
Is this so?
Color of water. Why are some side streams orange in color? Is
that the result of organic growth, or the result of iron deposits that
were laid down geologically?
Flood gold. Every sandbar in a river has material that is classified
according to it's specific gravity. Identify the specific gravity on all
locations on a sandbar, and explain flood gold.
Floods. Can floods be predicted? What are the variables involved
in flooding during spring breakup? How can they be measured? Are there
ways to avoid the floods by engineering or planning?
Erosion. Experiment with erosion control in your area using
local materials and imported materials. What are the greatest causes of
erosion?
