Fur sewing

Ann loved to sew fur. She made many articles for family members, then someone told her she should make articles to sell. She didn't know how much to charge for her articles. She knew how much her work was worth, but didn't know how much the fur and other material cost for each article.

She thought if she could figure the cost of a commercially tanned beaver skin in dollars per square inch, and she could figure how many square inches each article used, this would give her a good estimate. She knew there would be scraps and parts of the beaver skin that are unusable.

Commercially tanned beaver skins aren't really round, so she took the measurements of length plus width and averaged them. She considered this the diameter of the beaver. From that she figured the radius, and from that she figured the area of the skin.

A medium skin was 22" long and 18" wide and cost $42.

She had a wolf skin that she bought from her brother for $250.

She had it commercially tanned for $90.

The measurements of the back are on the right.

How much is it worth for one square inch? (Disregard the belly fur at this time.) ______________

Everyone likes wolf ruffs, as they shed frost from breath during very cold weather. She saw a commercial ruff in the store. It was 4" wide and 32" long and cost $190. How much is that per square inch? ___________

Could she make money just selling ruffs 1 ?

1 All ruffs are made of pieces sewn together, so don't worry about the skin being a trapezoid and the ruff being a rectangle. Just figure the number of square inches. She is going to round off anyway.
