McInnis, Noel
August 1972 | Useful Article All Referenced by: ANKN Clearinghouse | Grade Level(s): 9, 10, 11, 12 | Theme(s): Exploring Horizons |
Excerpt: "Our present educational methods, at all levels, tend to foster a common intellectual skill: thinking the world to pieces. This skills is essential. Analysis, reductionism, specialization, departmentalization--our various techniques for fragmenting our knowledge of the world have made possible and continue to make possible humankind's technological progress. To the extent that this progress is beneficial, we would not want to abandon our ability to think the world to pieces." |

Excerpt:
This workbook was created for many reasons. Urban students across the nation, and in Alaska, are exposed to the media on a regular basis and offered educational media opportunities on a regular basis. In rural areas, however, students are isolated from the media and are not routinely offered journalism or media programs. Journalism has historically been considered a "luxury" or an extracurricular activity, not part of the core curriculum. There is ample research to show that journalism instruction is not a luxury, rather, it provides relevance to writing programs, enhances social skills and creates a better understanding of history and current issues. Journalism programs also create an outlet for reading and writing, using materials based on economic, cultural, social and historical issues. Most important, journalism gives students a sense of voice, public service and creates better informed citizens which leads to empowered citizens.

Introduction to the Teacher's Guide,
LEVEL I - Secondary Yup'ik Language and Culture Program
OVERVIEW
The Yup'ik Language and Culture Curriculum is the first secondary program to be offered to students entirely in the Yup'ik language. As such, it represents a landmark in bilingual education in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. This program is presented with optimism, and with a sense of faith in the young adults of the region, that they will assure the survival of the Yup'ik language and traditions for the future. Throughout the program, a number of themes reappear. These themes are centered around the idea that, although language and culture change over time, they change in patterned and understandable ways. This means that people can, and do, adapt traditions, values, and words to meet their present needs, so that times of change do not necessarily mean times of cultural destruction. It is a major aim of this program to help students discover ways to apply the strengths of their ancestors to the unique situations in which they may find themselves. As old methods of problem-solving are applied to new problems, so methods of effective communication endure through time, even though the subjects about which people communicate, change. The program involves students in a series of projects and activities, during the course of the school year, that require real-life skills and community-based decisions. The activities involve reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the Yup'ik language in a variety of contexts. Activities are designed to challenge students' creativity, increase their motivation, and develop positive attitudes about themselves, their communities, and their language. Evaluation of student progress is stressed as an integral part of each project. Pacing and instructional methods are flexible and culturally appropriate, to allow for individual needs and variations among classes in different villages. Ample supplemental materials, and suggestions for expansion of projects, are provided to challenge highly motivated students.

Oral Traditions of an Eskimo People
Yupik Lore is a fascinating collection of Eskimo stories. Some are true; some are tales. All are typical of the kind of stories passed from paresnts to children so that the culture, along with language and love, may be passed on to the next generation. These stories are by and are about the Central Yupik people of southwestern Alaska, the largest cultural group native to the state. The Yupik language is still very much alive in the homes and schools of the region. For this reason the text of the stories is presented in its original and authentice Eskimo version, as well as with and English translation. The stories in this book serve to teach, to entertain, and at times to encourage young people to live according to the wisdom accumulated over the ages. You will find in this book short stories, along with accounts of past history and customs. You will find the teachings and common wisdom of the elders. You will even find instructions, rules, and recipes for Eskimo living. Finally, you will find the fables, myths, and legends which enlivened many a long, dark, winter evening for Eskimo families. Each of the stories in this book reflects some facet of a way of life in one of the world's most harsh and unrelenting climates. Beneath the cold of the far north, however, you will find in this book the warmth of a people. Cost: $22.

"A well designed curriculum framework is a dynamic toll providing guidance for local innovation. Curriculum frameworks also represent opportunities for dialogue and professional development that encourages local decision making. A curricular framework is a bridge between established standards and classroom practice. It articulates, organizes, and integrates the content and processes of education in a particular discipline. The design of this science framework requires the active involvement of all classroom teachers during succeeding years to continually revise and develop the curriculum in order to improve student learning."

Excerpt from Introduction by Eric Madsen:
"Occasionally an author takes bit and pieces of information that many people are more or less familiar with and puts them together in a way that offers new possibilities for understanding events around us. The focal paper in this volume, Harold Napoleon's Yuuyaraq, is such a discussion about the initial and continuing effects of the epidemics that afflicted Alaskan Natives from the 1770s through the 1940s."
