Upper Kalskag Post Office

Our interview was about the old Upper Post Office with Dunia Holmberg and Diana Samuelson. I learned that the first post office was in the Joseph and Olinga Gregory elementary school in Upper Kalskag. A teacher named Gene Avee told people to give her their letters and she’ll send them. This was in the year 1954. All the mail was sent out and brought in by dog sled and the driver was Paul Kameroff Sr.
The second post office was a little building next to the Catholic Church in 1959 at Upper. The post mistresses were Katrina Aloysius, Dunia Holmberg, and Mary Ann Passamika. They sorted mail, sent mail out, cleaned the little building, sold envelopes and stamps, and they also deposited the money daily.
The post office then moved to Alec and Katrina Aloysius’s house. It moved there because it was bigger and there was more space to put the mail. It moved in the year 1975. Alec was the agent and Katrina was the post mistress.
The post office moved again to the Morgan’s home in 1985. It moved because Katrina Aloysius retired to take care of her husband who had a stroke.
The post office has been in the same building since 1985 and I think we need a new one.
