One day some boys and I decided to go
out moose hunting upriver. We were planning on checking out a slough
that we pretty much knew had moose inside of it. But when we got
there we found others had been there before us because of their old
campsites. As we were idling in the slough we passed a lot of moose
tracks and we thought that we probably would catch a moose if we got
lucky. We then stopped at a meadow and checked if there was moose
inside of it. There was nothing so we went back to the boat and
checked out another meadow where we'd usually caught moose before. In
each meadow we noticed that people were there before us because we
found pop cans in the water and garbage all over the old campsites.
Trash was scattered around everywhere and it really made me mad.
There were plastic bags, popcans, canned food containers, styrofoam
cups and paper all over the place. We were so disgusted that after we
checked one more meadow we went back to the campsites to clean up the
trash.
I was really disappointed and angry
with the hunters for messing up these campsites and when I got back
to Marshall I wrote a letter to the Drums to shame the moose hunters
into taking their trash with them the next time they went hunting. I
wrote that it wasn't only an environmental problem but that it was
also disrespectful and harmful to the animals in the wild. And since
it hurt the animals, it would eventually hurt us.
