Three Days In The
Storm
It was very calm out one winter
morning when Wilson, Mitchell, and Barney got ready to go out moose
hunting. They got everything they needed ready for their three day
camp out: their grub, dog food, warm sleeping bags, and other things.
Then they took off.
With dogs it took them all day to get
where they wanted to camp. When they arrived they got out the tent
and started making fire to cook their food. They hadn't eaten all day
and they were hungry. They also had to make dog food. After finishing
their camp chores they went to bed so they could get up early to go
hunting.
For two days all they did was hunt.
Finally, on the third day when they were getting ready to go home
Barney walked to the meadow and saw a very big bull moose running
towards him. He quickly aimed his gun and shot the moose.
While the three men were cutting up
the moose it started to snow very hard. Just as they finished putting
the moose meat away in their sleds it really started to storm. They
went a little ways but couldn't see anything so they stopped and made
camp. They didn't have any food left because they'd only brought grub
for a few days, but they did have the moose meat that Barney had
caught.
The next day they didn't want to go
out because they could still hear the stormy weather and they didn't
even think about feeding their dogs.
Finally, on the third day of the
storm Mitchell got up and went outside to check on the dogs. It was
very calm out again and just a couple of dogs had frozen to death.
When Mitchell went back in the tent to wake up Wilson and Barney,
Wilson said that he was very cold and could hardly move his body. So
Barney and Mitchell wrapped him up with their sleeping bags, got the
dogs ready and took off back to Marshall.
When they got to Marshall they
brought Wilson to the clinic and the health aides had to medivac him
to Bethel because he had hypothermia and almost died.
