Excerpt:
As a University of Alaska Fairbanks graduate student and aspiring education professor in the early 1980s, Angayuqaq Oscar Kawagley flew alongside one of his mentors to a conference in Canada and started jotting some notes on the back of an envelope.
"Oscar's outlining this presentation, it led to his dissertation "Yup'ik Ways of Knowing", said Ray Barnhardt, a longtime UAF professor and co-director of the school's Alaska Native Knowledge Network. "It turned into his first expression of that notion. He mapped an agenda right then that continues today."
From a collection of thoughts on an envelope, to "Yup'ik Ways of Knowing" to his very own book, "A Yupiaq Worldview: A Pathway to Ecology and Spirit", Kawagley has spent most of his life finding ways to combine traditional Yup'ik language and culture with the more modern, Westernized ways of his people today. His passion for education and his professionalism will soon be honored by the National Indian Education Association. |
