Taking Native education to national stage

Excerpt:
Dr. Theresa Arevgaq John has been an advocate for traditional models of Alaska Native education for years, and now she has a national platform to share her views.
Her latest distinguished recognition came from President Barack Obama in April when he appointed her to the National Advisory Council on Indian Education. She is the first Alaska Native to receive this prestigious award.

John, originally from Toksook Bay, received her doctorate from the indigenous studies graduate program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She is an associate professor in the Department of Alaska Native Studies and Rural Development at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
