If you haven’t yet registered and made hotel reservations for the Fishing People of the North Symposium, now is the time to do so! The symposium runs September 14-17, 2011, at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Anchorage. The symposium is one of a long series of Wakefield Symposia sponsored by Alaska Sea Grant with support of many partners.

Fishing People of the North is an international symposium and a forum for scholars, fishery managers, fishing families, and others to explore the human dimensions of fishery systems and the growing need to include social science research in policy processes. It will be a place for sharing what we have learned about the opportunities and constraints that fishing people in northern countries encounter in a time of significant environmental, social, and economic change. Speakers at the symposium come from Alaska, other places in the US, Canada, Russia, Norway and other countries.

Thursday evening, September 15th from 7 to 9, a poetry/prose and music evening will be held at Snow City Cafe to celebrate the fishing life. Please join us at this event and let me know if you would like to participate! Friday evening, the symposium holds a private guided tour of "Sailing for Salmon" exhibit at the Anchorage Museum.
Register by August 14 for $200 ($150 for students) online at http://seagrant.uaf.edu/conferences/2011/wakefield-people/index.php. After August 14 the registration fee will go up to $250 ($200 for students).

HOTEL: For the special meeting rate of $139, hotel reservations must be made directly with the hotel by August 14, 2011; use the discount code ASGMP. This rate extends three days prior to and three days after the meeting dates.
