"The forested lands of interior Alaska have been inhabited by hunting and gathering peoples for at least 10,000 years, and perhaps as long as 20,000 years. This tradition of Native occupancy is sustained today by Indians and Eskimos who live in widely scattered villages, pursuing what is now called a subsistence lifestyle."
