Excerpt:

Uggianaqtuq is a North Baffin lnuktitut word that means to behave unexpectedly, or in an unfamiliar way. From the perspective of many Inuit hunters and elders in the Arctic, the weather has been uggianaqtuq in recent years.

In this interactive, multi-media CD ROM, Inuit from two communities in the eastern Canadian Arctic (Baker Lake and Clyde River, Nunavut) share their perspectives on recent environmental changes. The integration of interview video clips, maps, text and photos helps to illustrate Inuit observations of changes in the environment and the impacts on theirlivelihoods. For example, elders in Baker Lake describe how water levels in lakes and rivers have dropped significantly in the last five years, blocking access to hunting areas. In Clyde River, hunters map areas of thinning sea ice and unusual cracks that cause dangerous travel conditions.

'When the Weather is Uggianaqtuq' is a pilot project that uses media technology to help communicate Inuit observations and concerns about recent environmental change to students, researchers, and decision-makers in Nunavut and beyond.
