"Conflicting Visions" is republished by the University of Alaska Veniaminov Bicentennial Project in conjunction with the symposium, and aided by a contribution from the Alaska Native Knowledge Network.

Excerpt from Preface to the l997 Update of "Conflicting Visions":

"I am happy and humbled to have this new edition of 'Conflicting Visions' published in conjunction with the Saint Innocent Veniaminov Bicentennial 1797-1997. The information contained in the paper has remained new and revealing for several generations of readers since its first presentation almost twenty years ago. 'Conflicting Visions' has remained popular among Alaskan educators and has been circulated widely since its initial presentation as a conference paper in October 1979, its subsequent photocopy distribution in manuscript in Spring 1980, and its ultimate publication in 1982 as an Occasional Paper of the Center for Cross-Cultural Education at the University of Alaska - Fairbanks (during all of which years I was on the faculty of Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage). The present update is one of the Alaska projects of the international series of events celebrating and commemorating the birth of Veniaminov two hundred years ago."
