Draft for Professional Review September, 1997

DESIGN PLAN
DRAFT FOR PROFESSIONAL REVIEW
JUNE TO AUGUST 1997

Alaska Onward to Excellence Planning has set the stage for the development and implementation of a strong Yup'ik language and culture curriculum which is aligned with LKSD and State of Alaska Learner outcomes in science, the social studies, skills for a healthy life and world languages, and with learner outcomes for Yup'ik language and cultural knowledge under development within the District.

Upingaurluta, Getting Ready for Life is a series of fourteen (14) thematic unites to be revisited each year kindergarten through third grade. Content of each unit will be standards based and founded upon important aspects of the cycle of Yup'ik life of always getting ready. Though themes are revisited each of the four years, content will spiral upward with a view of reaching important benchmarks set by the District in concert with the State of Alaska. Yup'ik history and career exploration will begin in the third grade so that children begin to think about the world that is required them to function within society.

Thematic units are intended for children who are dominant speakers of Yup'ik and will be taught by Associate and Yup'ik speaking certified teachers. Parents, community members and Elders are important co/team teachers in this program. Upingarluta will provide a developmentally appropriate understanding of what it means to be Yup'ik through experiences with customs, values, history, daily life, food and clothing, spirituality and ceremonies. The dream is that traditional language will be developed with a real understanding facilitating communication among the generations, allowing children to speak with their grandparents and children they may have.
