" Introduction

The ocean beach is a rich area to explore with children. It offers a wide range of conditions, and presents many different habitats occupied by an incredible variety of organisms. No two beaches are alike, each having its own unique features. So many of us walk along the seashore unaware that we are surrounded by millions of small creatures hidden in the sand, under rocks or in masses of seaweed.

The activities offered in this booklet will hopefully serve as guidelines for your exploration of the countless wonders along the seashore. We have included a wide range of activities which are not only related to science, but are relevant to art, social studies, language arts, and mathematics. Our emphasis is in doing the work in the field instead of collecting and describing materials in the classroom. The fragility of the environment makes it imperative that we develop the children's awareness of ecological factors and stress the importance of conservation."
