Maniilaq Association commissioned this book to help preserve Inupiaq food wisdom and to encourage the use of local foods. Attention is focused on improving local nutrition and was intended to reach the high school students and young adults of the area. Included are reasons to gather wild food, Inupiaq words used in this book, how to use the book for plant identification of leaves, berries, roots and miscellaneous plants. In the appendix is useful information on storage places, containers, nutritional tables, warnings, poisonous plants and recipes including Akutuq. This is an excellent publication with clear drawings and many photographs.
