Beginning with a short biography of Madeline Solomon the collector of the songs the book goes on to explain the three basic types of songs sung at potlatches- the washtub songs, the stick dance songs, and the mask dance songs. Feeling that it is very important for the children and the adults to know how to sing the right words to the songs and to gain a better understanding of why the songs were composed the book provides musical notes, words and background of the dance songs.
