From the Preface; "The purpose of this study is to describe an analyze changes in the lifeways of the Ingalik Indians of the lower-middle Yuikon River in west-central Alaska during the period of Euro-American contact from 1790 to 1935. It is not only a book about changing Indian culture.... It is also an account of the white men and women who traveled trhough Indian land and occasionallh lived among the native people, sometimes for many years. (Shageluk and Anvik are the current villages of the Ingalik. )
