Preface

The purpose of the McDonald's Economics Action Pack is to provide a primary understanding of economic concepts for children in intermediate and upper-elementary grades. The Action Pack is based on the role of the individual as a consumer in the American enterprise system, the economic role which is closest to a young child's understanding and experience.
Research and the experience of the Illinois Council on Economic Education indicate that the concepts covered in this package can be learned at these early grade levels through the format that is used here. Accordingly, the materials are immediately applicable to facilitate introduction and the development of concepts through classroom activities. Also included in the Economic Action Packet is a pre- and post-testing instrument, which we encourage educators to use.
This program fits within the broader framework of a recognized need for improved economic literacy. We hope that it will provide a starting point for an introduction of economic principles as they affect our lives. We believe teachers will find the Economics Action Pack useful, enjoyable and helpful.

Michael A. MacDowell
Executive Director
