Maniilaq is the name of a man that is held in very high regard by the older Inupiat Eskimos of the Northwest Arctic. He was an Eskimo prophet and many still believe him and in the fulfillment of his prophecies. The book is chiefly based on an elders conference held in 1978 in Kotzebue when the elders were taped on their recollections regarding Maniilaq.
