The author was a teacher at the Chemawa Indian School in Oregon when she collected these writings from her Inupiat students and turned them into a book. The students write of their reaction to "life in the United States" and the thilngs they remember and miss about their homeland.. The back jacket notes "Mrs. Beavers has described her book as : ' A recognition of the educational advantages of a school dinanced by the Federal government for those of Indian heritage who can be trained to make a living in the present machine age.'
