This book grew out of fifteen years of anthropological work in Arctic and Sub-Arctic Canada. Beginning with Stereotypes Hugh Brody writes " The Eskimo makes his and her appearance with a smile....an eternallly happy, optimistic little figure; a round, furry and cuddly human with a pet name---- By contrast "The Indian is cunning, warlike and stands in our way". "The Eskimo smiles from the sidelines". This book breaks all stereotypes and presents a readable and honest portrayal of Canadian Inuit.
