Produced by Kootznoowoo Cultural & Educational Foundation, Inc., this is the finest video produced to date on Tlingit history. In a well-written narrative accompanied by historical photographs and contemporary footage, it reviews the historical events of 1882 that culminated in the U.S. naval bombardment of Angoon. The question of possible causes is raised: was it an accident or deliberate? Was it malice or a failure of cross-cultural communication? The video documents the situation 100 years later in the words of Governor Jay Hammond and the people of Angoon, descendants of those who suffered the bombardment, filmed during a ceremony of remembrance and healing on October 26, 1982, marking the 100th anniversary of the event. Because the conflict was never diplomatically resolved, the tape poses the unanswered question of resolution.
