Most Alaska Natives must travel by air to obtain health care services from a physician or to be treated in a hospital. Access to health care by rural Alaska Natives has become very restricted as a result of increased health care costs, increased travel costs, additional patient demand for services, and the persistent poverty of our beneficiary population. The buying power of health care dollars has declined and increases in IHS allocations have not been adequate to match actual costs for delivery of health care services. This situation has evolved into health care crisis...

The analysis and conclusions presented in this report have been corroborated by the Regional Native Health Corporations, Indian Health Service, Alaska Native Health Board, and State of Alaska Emergency Medical Services.
