Excerpts:

In my five years as a teacher in Alakanuk, I often heard students questioning, "Why do we have to learn about the Iran-Iraq war? How will a war in the Middle East influence our lives in Western Alaska?" Others would ask, "How will a knowledge of factoring polynomials help me in my life in Alakanuk? Do I need to know how to factor fish in the summer?" The students' basic point was that we often study things that to them seem far removed from our lives in Western Alaska.

Of course, all things affect us sooner or later, such as a piece of federal legislation called the Alaskans Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA), passed in 1971 in a far-away place called Washington, D.C. This book is about ANCSA. ANCSA is a very important piece of legislation for the Native people in our state. The information that you will be learning in this book is very important to you. It will have a very, very big impact on your future, on the future of the people in your village and on the future of your Yup'ik culture. ANCSA is all about land and issues related to land.

Many Native leaders in Alaska are concerned that Native-held lands in our state may be lost during the course of the next several years. Some people in your village may be concerned that the LAND around your community will be lost. To prevent this from happening, the people in your village will have to be educated on the very complex, controversial ANCSA issues.

The information inside this book could be important to you. As a future leader, or just as a common citizen in your village, you will face many difficult decisions. You will need information to make intelligent choices. Your knowledge of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act could make a big difference for you and for the people of your village.
