PREFACE

The first objective of this book is the recreational goal of active enjoyment. A special objective is to exploit the opportunities for language use that are inherent in the game activities. As far as the children are concerned, they will be merely playing a game of tag, for instance, whereas the teacher will be aware that they are demonstrating and using pre-selected new verbs, or reviewing some prepositional phrases showing position. In the activities are provided the most effective possible means of language learning: natural occasions for repetition of words and structures in real situations that necessitate speech.

Of course the games could not possibly include a graded nor even a representative selection of English structures. They may be used as a supplement to your ESL program, or purely for the fun of it. Because the learning is in guise of a game, there should be no negative emphasis of correcting or tiresome repetition, but rather a positive drive towards increasing accuracy of comprehension and expression.

Other fringe benefits you may find are: transmittal of old games and play ways; development of self-expression, coordination; use of whimsy, humor, curiosity and foresight; experiencing of leadership; learning to follow rules, handle success and failure; and discarding of classroom shyness.

Cost: $7.50
