FIRST EDITION 1978

Foreword

When we published the Central Yupik course in 1977, it was met with uniform enthusiasm by teachers and students alike. The authors provided us with so many new and fascinating ideas for language teaching that we decided to ask them to put together this kit for us.
The purpose of this collection of supplementary aids is to put into the hands of Yupik teachers some of the tools to help them teach the language. Fortunately the authors, Ed Tennant and Bob Rebert, have not only designed the six basic teaching aids in this kit. They have gone further. They have included more new ideas in this guidebook to help teachers process language in the classroom.
To repeat our remarks at the beginning of both the teacher and the student manuals of Central Yupik, we are convinced that "good teachers will guarantee that students will learn well." For that reason our school districts have again cooperated to fund and foster this kit for teachers.
The designers of the teacher kit have not disappointed us. They have religiously followed the words of Plato quoted in the cover sheet of the text. They "lead learners by what amuses them, so that they may better discover the bent of their minds."
Finally, we ask that every teacher who uses the Central Yupik course and this kit of teaching aids share his or her experiences with us. Our school districts will compile these ideas to become an additional component for all to include in this kit.
