Oral Traditions of an Eskimo People

Yupik Lore is a fascinating collection of Eskimo stories. Some are true; some are tales. All are typical of the kind of stories passed from paresnts to children so that the culture, along with language and love, may be passed on to the next generation.
These stories are by and are about the Central Yupik people of southwestern Alaska, the largest cultural group native to the state. The Yupik language is still very much alive in the homes and schools of the region. For this reason the text of the stories is presented in its original and authentice Eskimo version, as well as with and English translation.
The stories in this book serve to teach, to entertain, and at times to encourage young people to live according to the wisdom accumulated over the ages.
You will find in this book short stories, along with accounts of past history and customs. You will find the teachings and common wisdom of the elders. You will even find instructions, rules, and recipes for Eskimo living. Finally, you will find the fables, myths, and legends which enlivened many a long, dark, winter evening for Eskimo families.
Each of the stories in this book reflects some facet of a way of life in one of the world's most harsh and unrelenting climates. Beneath the cold of the far north, however, you will find in this book the warmth of a people.
Cost: $22.
