From FORWARD:

The School-Based Enterprise Manual is written to assist school districts in starting a school-based enterprise within their community. Background information, guidelines toward implementation, curriculum resources, and management of a school-based enterprise will be discussed in this handbook.

It is the intent of this handbook to be a valuable resource to administrators, teachers, school district personnel, and community members who will assist in organizing and operating a school-based enterprise.

Partnerships between schools and local businesses are not new. Many business people and educators have started to realize the many advantages students gain from the opportunity to learn through real life situations. In Alaska's boom or bust economy the importance of being prepared for the world of work becomes even more important. Students need to be prepared to make decisions and assist in local planning. School-based enterprises can reflect the needs and desires of individual communities.

The handbook is organized in five sections:

I. School-Based Enterprise: A Process
School-based enterprises are "a process", not just a curriculum project. This section explains the process and the importance of hands-on involvement of the students from the beginning.

II . School-Based Enterprise: Start-Up
Beginning and funding a school-based enterprise can be accomplished in a variety of ways. The activities that students work through to start-up a school-based enterprise help them gather useful information about their community.

III . School-Based Enterprise: On-going
On-going operation of a school-based enterprise is challenging with staff and student turnover. It is important to decide on student competencies that will be covered through the activities.

IV. Resources
Examples of resources and materials found useful by model site school-based enterprises.

V. Appendices
Samples of documents, advisory board charter, DOL application, etc. used by school-based enterprises.
