The activities in the Student Workbook are for the purposes of improving reading comprehension and vocabulary development. The Workbook contains eleven exercises that consist of a variety of reading and vocabulary development skills. There is one exercise for each story in St. Lawrence Island Legends.
The Teacher's Edition of the Workbook includes:

1. explanations of the skills necessary to use in completing the exercises,
2. suggestions for introducing the activities to the students, and
3. answers to the questions and word study included in each exercise.
It is essential learning principles be utilized to help students increase their reading comprehension skills and vocabulary development. The following procedures are recommended in using the Workbook.
Teach
Teach the skill to be used in the exercise.

Practice
Students complete the Workbook exercise.

Assess
Assess the students' performance of the skills.

Reteach
Reteach the skill and provide guided practice.
New skills to be used in the Workbook should be taught and clarified before the students start the exercise. The exercises are to provide practice in using the skills. It is essential to assess the performance of the students. If they make errors on the exercises or seem uncertain of their answers, reteach the skill and provide guided practice in using the skill. Following these procedures will help the students to understand and remember what they read and study.
Information about the skills being learned, suggestions for teaching the skills, and answers to the questions and vocabulary development follow this section. These guidelines should be read before introducing the exercises to the students.
