Category: Regional Corporations
The title and content of the series provide an analogy between the role of the whale in certain Alaska Native subsistence lifestyles, and the roles and responsibilities of the corporations created under ANCSA. Each tape in the ten part series begins with the following prayer by the Reverend Merculieff from St. George Island: "This land of Alaska, which thou gave to our ancestors who had come and gone before us, is now being handed to us a second time by the act of the United States Congress and our untiring efforts. A second chance is given to us by thee to be the new custodians and caretakers."
"Under the terms of...ANCSA, the 962.5 million dollars and nearly 44 million acres of land given in exchange for relinquishing aboriginal land claims were to be distributed to eligible Alaska Natives, shareholders through business corporations. Twelve regional profit-making corporations were mandated...with the possibility of a thirteenth for Alaska Natives living outside the state...each of the more than 200 villages listed in the bill, was required to form either profit or non-profit corporations. In this program, the fifth in a 10 part series...leaders of Sealaska and Cook Inlet Region Region, Inc. will profile their activities in dividing the benefits of ANCSA into profits for shareholders."1 Interview segments include the perspectives of Native leaders Byron Mallott (past President, Alaska Federation of Natives; former Commissioner, Community and Regional Affairs; Chairman of the Board, Sealaska), Roger Lang (past President, Alaska Federation of Natives; President, Alaska Native Foundation; member, Sealaska Board of Directors); Andy Hope III (Executive Director, Sitka Community Association; Director, Shee Atika Corporation; shareholder, Sealaska Corporation); and Roy Huhndorf (President, Cook Inlet Region, Inc.). Topics include the 1959 Court of Claims Settlement with the Tlingit/Haida Natives, resource development, and maintenance of village lifestyles versus urban interests.
