"An account of the politics of the land claims settlement as it led to permission for construction of the trans-Alaska pipeline. The author worked for two Alaska newspapers as Washington correspondent from 1967 to 1971. She begins with a narrative on the summer of 1969, going on to record the tight battle of oil and government vs. Natives, using as resource materials her own journalistic coverage, plus articles from the Alaska press during the years before and after passage. The work is aimed at people totally unfamiliar with the land claims, rather than simply an in-house document for Alaskans only"1
"This book, against the background of the history of the state, tells the story of the struggle for Native claims, the work for passage of the Act, the immediate effect of the Act, and the impact of oil development on the implementation of the Act."2
