From Introduction:

PURPOSE

The JHS Fisheries Project is an extension of a science integration project that was begun in 1991. Its purpose is to make science a culturally significant learning experience for all of the students at Jimmy Huntington School. All eight teachers at the school discovered ways to teach other subjects and skills through the medium of science. The project utilized local experts and resources whenever possible.
The JHS Fisheries Project is a model which continues the development of other integrated science units. It is available to all schools in the Yukon-Koyukuk School District, and to participants in the SMART Project organized by the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory in Portland, Oregon. Copies of this Project are available to individuals by contacting Michele Bifelt, P.O. Box 69, Huslia, AK 99746.

The JHS Fisheries Project met the following needs of our students:

Science instruction was isolated from the rest of the curriculum in some classes.

Students were entering junior high unfamiliar with science concepts and lacking basic science skills.

The current program was not culturally significant for our Koyukon Athabascan students.

Parents were unaware of the scope of the science program and were unable to reinforce and extend classroom learning.

PROJECT GOALS

The staff at Jimmy Huntington School met early in the school year to plan this project. As a group, we set goals that we all felt were important to the success of the project.

The project goals were:

Students will be able to explain the significance of fish in their culture.

Students will complete a research project and/or will generate a book on their experiences.

Students will improve their mathematical skills.

Students will improve their geography skills.

CLASSROOM GOALS

Each of the eight staff members at JHS formulated his or her own set of classroom goals built on the schoolwide goals. All of the classes are multigraded as follows: Kindergarten-First; Second-Third-Fourth; Fifth-Sixth; Seventh-Eighth; Ninth-Tenth; Eleventh-Twelfth. However, the junior high/high school goals were written for the subject area rather than the grade level.
