What is Sheishoox?

Sheishoox is Tlingit, and represents the shaman's rattle. The Sheishoox vision is "Joining hands to promote the health and wellness of our Juneau/ Douglas Native community". Sheishoox is an effort to involve the Juneau-Douglas Native Community in identifying health issues and developing strategies to prevent health problems. Sheishoox is organized using the Planned Approach to Community Health (PATCH) program, designed to help communities plan, implement, and evaluate health promotion programs that are directed at preventing health problems.

Activities sponsored by Sheishoox in the past include a lowfat and Native food potluck, a kid's poster contest and pool party, food tasting booths, cholesterol and blood sugar screenings, health appraisals, cooking classes and educational displays.

Childrens drawings in this cookbook are from the Sheishoox Native Alaskan Foods Poster Contest, held in January 1997.
