Excerpt from Preface:

"The issues discussed here are cross-cultural in their origin, in the sense that they arise out of the coming together of two different cultural systems -- one reflected in the western institutional structure of the school, and the other reflected in the fabric of life in Alaskan Native communities. While the problems that result from this cross-cultural encounter have been evident for a long time, we are just beginning to understand how and why they originate. The articles in this collection provide many new insights into the processes underlying cross-cultural education and offer new hope that may one day be able to develop the alternative structures that are necessary to give everyone equal access to the resources of a culturally heterogeneous society."
