From Author:

"As the author, I'm naturally advertising this book using listservs, most of which I subscribe to. I didn't write it for the money! I'm retired now, and have independent income. It was begun over ten years ago. Originally Scarecrow had a price of $79.50 on it, then I said I'd take minimal royalties, so that brought the price down (to $59.50), thank god.

"The content is two-sided: there is as much on conditions in Native communities as on library services to Natives/Indians living in them. Urban Native populations and library services to them are covered, as well as those in rural and remote areas. The approach is interdisciplinary, even serendipitous and episodic at times. Two chapters draw primarily on my own experience in western Alaska, and work for coastal and plains tribes. There are eight chapters, and appendices.

"Besides the two mentioned above, there are chapters on Canada/Greenland, Russia/Soviet Union/Russia Reborn, Oral/Written traditions, Urbanization and modernization, Library education and employment for Natives, and one on the author's background and other miscellany. There are over 60 pages of bibliographies, many entries being annotated. I used Danish translators for Greenland material, and know enough Russian myself to produce a chapter on Russia. I looked at actual library services to Native people across the north, not at activities of major libraries and institutions, though they are noted, of course. Though the scope is circumpolar, I selectively use the United States for much of the non-geographical chapters. The situation in some major cities of the Lower 48 is also addressed."

"Though written mainly with fellow non-Native librarians serving Native populations, rural and urban, in mind, it might also be of interest to Native library workers. Also library educators.

"If you have any questions, I'll be pleased to try and answer them.
