Excerpt from Introduction:

"Above all, the book is concerned with having the children try out activities which are linked to real-life situations. Most of the 'Getting to Know Snow' activities are adapted from actual exercises performed by government teams of snow surveyors. These teams set out each winter to measure the depth and water equivalent of the snow at many locations throughout the mountains of the province. Using the information they collect, it is possible to predict the amount of water which will run off the mountain when the snow melts in the spring. This gives us the advantage of being able to prepare for floods or droughts before they occur. By having the children perform some of these activities it is hoped that they will become aware of the importance of learning about snow."
