Excerpt from Introduction by Ray Barnhardt:

"The school district of St. Mary's, Alaska, has for twenty years pursued the goal of bringing the educational experiences provided by the school into line with social, cultural and economic aspirations of the Yup'ik people it serves. It constantly seeks to find ways for the school to be a positive force in the community, and in the preservation and perpetuation of the cultural heritage of the people. This paper describes the context and history of the school, its goals and philosophy, and offers some lessons learnt during the school's twenty-year history, which may be useful to other schools and communities."
