Excerpt:

"This is Katherine Peter's account of how she tans moose hides, a skill she learned from her mother-in-law in Arctic Village. The photographs show many of the steps described.

"Different people in different area have their own ways of tanning hides. Some of the steps are different if the tanning is being done in the winter instead of the summer. This is just one of the traditional Alaskan Athabaskan methods of tanning. This method uses only one commercially manufactured tool--the knife-- and no chemicals other than soap. The result is the soft, durable, golden-brown hide out of which moccasins, gloves, and other garments are made.
