Excerpt (John H. Chilcott):

The purpose of this book has been twofold. First, we have attempted to provide articles that describe the culture of the practicing school administrator. Second, we have attempted to provide the reader with descriptions of the methods by which anthropologists have approached administrative behavior in a variety of cultural environments; a cultural map which has been referred to as "an anthropological perspective." This "anthropological perspective" might be referred to as the CULTURE of the anthropologist. The educational administrators AS A GROUP have developed their own special culture; one that is unique to them. That is to say, educational adminstrators have developed their own cultural map with special meaning--language, role expectations, behaviors, and world view. This does not mean that they do not also participate in other sociocultural groupings in American society. They most certainly do, and in this sense are MULTICULTURAL. Some features of the various cultures in which they participate; church group, ethnic group, social class, etc., cross-cut all these groups, while some cultural features are unique to only educational administrators. It is toward these unique features that this book has been directed.
