This book is intended for a broad audience -- those concerned about Alaska. It reports on a long-range forecast of Alaska's economic development, and its purposes are to stimulate discussion about development options and to illuminate the need for a consensus on development policy.

The predictions were made by a panel of over one hundred distinguished Alaskan experts, using the Delphi forecasting method. These predictions are presented and discussed in a context designed to highlight their significance for Alaska's development strategy. In addition to our own analysis, eighteen specially invited commentators present their views of the forecast and discuss development possibilities open to the state.

The book begins with an overview of Alaska's opportunity to influence its future, and an overview of forecasting methods. Then the predictions are presented in five chapters focusing on external events likely to affect Alaska, development issues and problems, the population and the economy, industrial sectors, and rural Alaska. The final chapter suggests some approaches for obtaining a consensus on development strategy for the state.
