Theme(s): Cultural Expression

This book is illustrated by Alice C. Cook. It includes string stories written in both English and Iñupiaq.

"...Stories In String has been developed to provide culturally oriented reading materials for the pupils in Alaskan Eskimo classrooms. As the name indicates, these short readings have been derived from the traditional 'string figure' games of the Eskimo. The illustrations accompanying the texts are representative of the string figures which are formed in the manner of a 'cat's cradle.' The stories are told as the figures are developed by the performer. Only one figure has been chosen to illustrate each story, although in actual practice the 'cat's cradle' may undergo a series of transformations in the telling of any particular story..."
