Excerpt:

"Lore of St. Lawrence Island is a compelling collection of Eskimo stories handed down by the elders of the village of Sivuqaq (Gambell).

"The village sits on the northwest tip of the island far out in the Bering Sea only 40 miles from the coast of Siberia.

"In this book you will find in both Eskimo and English the accounts of six elders who were born before the turn of the century.

"They tell us of the way they lived before the coming of the white man, of the knowledge, skills, and crafts that were needed to survive in a harsh and demanding climate, and if the activities associated with great annual whale hunt.

"Each of the stories has a warmth and flavor of its own as the values of a culture unfold in the words of an elder who wants those values to live on. Live on for the young people who now live a different lifestyle and live on for those outsiders who want to know more about the Eskimo way of life from Eskimos themselves."
