Excerpt:

"The impact that disease has had on the Indian and Eskimo peoples of Canada sometimes passes through the pages of history with but little notice. Smallpox, tuberculosis, diphtheria, and influenza have had a profound effect on the survival of the people. Periodically, epidemics swept through parts of Canada leaving in their wake severely reduced numbers of people as well as survivors who carried with them the scars of their illnesses for the rest of their lives. In 1928 such an epidemic occurred in the Fort Fitzgerald area of Northern Alberta. (Fort Fitzgerald is located on the Slave River, south of Fort Smith) The recollections of Mrs. Helene Unka of Fort Resolution will indicate to the reader the severity of the conditions at that time."
