Kathy tells the story of a teacher who introduces a new way of teaching mathematics based on achieving mathematical understanding rather than learning rules. Kathy Hamilton is convinced that this innovation, consistent with the most recent research in mathematical education, will benefit all students but especially children of color. However, a parent of an African-American student objects to the "experiment." This case raises central questions in the teaching of mathematics and in the teaching of children from different cultural backgrounds.
