"Words are words, in any context, whatever the source. Words, with all of the same elemental parts that are to be taught are also found in curricula other than reading. It seems logical then, that reading instruction could also be taught through the content materials of social studies concepts taught in early in early grades often come from children's home, neighborhood, and community experiences; therefore, this type of reading material would be identifiable with his or her life. The vocabulary used would be within most children's listening vocabulary. Based on this fact, most children could learn to read in social studies curricula as well as in formal reading textbooks."
