Detailed Description
Procedures: Names of bush berries in English and Yup'ik.
The students will learn the names of local berries that grow along the Kuskokwim area.
BERRIES: mercuullugpiit---high bush cranberries puyuraat---low or high bush raspberries
acsaanglluut---gooseberries tuutaruat---rosehips
Help students to identify the poisonous plants which grow in their area. The berries that are listed above are edible, they can be eaten raw, cooked, mashed, jelled or made into akutaq.
tulukaruut neqait---baneberries; Baneberries can be red or white, as few as two berries can kill a child.

Activities: Field trips, collect leaves, pick berries, make akutaq, jam, jellies, press plants, laminate, label and made into books, find the medicinal uses.
