This spruce root waste basket (for papers or magazines) was made by Mrs. William Peters, Sr. (Lottie) in the spring of 1933. She was a Thlingit Indian woman. Mrs. Peters presented it to their Government nurse, Lila Brougher, on the event of her marriage, with the following statement, "This basket used to sell for $25.00, now only $15.00. It only cost you $10.00. I give you wedding present on it!" It was sold. The roots of this basket were dyed brown with hemlock bark before weaving. The pattern is made of roots dyed with blueberry juice. | |
